Cat comes back
Last year's surprise visitor Catherine Hedger is visiting us again this year. Catherine (or Cat as she prefers) still holds the record as our most travelled guest - making a nine hour journey from Worthing in West Sussex to stay at the Centre.
Cat, who came across the Alan Shearer Centre website quite by chance last year, was determined not to let funding difficulties prevent her from coming North for a holiday. You can read her story in our Achived News.
Cat enjoyed her last stay so much she said she wanted it to become an annual event. We're pleased to say it looks as though she is going to get her wish. We look forward to seeing her again in July - no doubt with another list of local attractions (and shops) she wants to visit.
Sweet dreams
Guests with specific needs can sleep soundly thanks to the Short Break Centre's latest investment. The new £6,000 Caldey Colt specialist bed system was ordered on the recommendation of one of our regular guests, who uses one at home.
The bed, which is made by specialist manufacturers in Germany, has a height and tilt adjustment to allow individual settings for greatest comfort. Its soft, padded interior reduces the risk of injury which can result from violent movement during sleep.
Janice Bell, St Cuthberts Care Operations Director, said:
“We always welcome suggestions and feedback from our service users. The purchase of the new bed demonstrates that we are responsive to the needs of our guests and their carers and our commitment to continuous investment in the Alan Shearer Short Break Centre.”
They’ve been framed!
Guests at the Alan Shearer Short Break Centre have been blown up and framed!

Photos of some of our guests who stayed at the Centre this winter have been enlarged and transferred to canvas to provide unique décor for all our visitors to enjoy. The one foot by one foot square pictures will be used to adorn the walls in the hallway and lounge areas.
The photos feature guests taking part in Christmas festivities and creative activities as well as a peaceful scene of the Centre’s gardens covered in snow taken during the recent wintry weather.
Carol Harrison, the registered manager, who commissioned the printing of the five canvasses said:
”The pictures provide a personal touch and give the Centre a friendly, home from home feel.”
